Masks

Photo by Ibolya Toldi on Pexels.com

I switch from mask to mask

A tailored face to match every occasion

Whether it be joyful or sorrowful,

Festive or morose

I have an expression for it

Act happy, smile, just go along with it

Don’t show them what you’re really feeling

They don’t wish to see my true emotions

They don’t desire to stand against the truth

They don’t want to see how my disguises are cracking by the day,

Bits of chalky plaster crumbling away

Reality shining through

As threads of sanity come undone

Every emotion, just a practiced mask I adorn

In the twisted masquerade called life
